The Flaherty is kicking off their 60th Anniversary by visiting The DocYard – come join the celebration!
Experience what it means to sit in a theater without any preconceived notions of what you’re about to see and discover cinema as it’s meant to be seen. In the spirit of the Flaherty tradition, the program of the evening will be not be revealed until it is projected on the screen. It’s an opportunity to participate in this unique experience that is the Flaherty, where you are urged to arrive with an open mind and without any preconceptions.
Join us for an evening of screening and discussion. Selections from past Robert Flaherty Film Seminars and Flaherty NYC Series will be screened followed by a conversation on non-fiction film. Explore the creative process of contemporary filmmakers and artists who are expanding the boundaries of documentary filmmaking. Their films will make you laugh, think, and cry.
As always, the conversation will continue over refreshments.
About the Flaherty
The Flaherty is most known for its week-long annual Seminar where filmmakers, programmers, academics, and students from the US and abroad gather for a creative experience of screenings and discussion. Distinct from film festivals, the Flaherty’s impact and reputation is forged by an immersive retreat experience where a guest curator presents a thematically organized program and 10-12 internationally recognized filmmakers discuss their films. The Flaherty fosters meaningful connections among participants in a setting unencumbered by distractions and carefully designed for the exchange of ideas. Past filmmakers include: Pedro Costa, Lourdes Portillo, DA Pennebaker, Agnes Varda, Satyajit Ray, Louis Malle, Frederick Wiseman, Natalia Almada, Paul Chan, Charles Burnett and Lisandro Alonso.
Many collaborations got their start at the Flaherty – films, festivals, and media organizations – even marriages. It is a place where filmmakers connect with one another, exchange ideas and are exposed to cutting edge developments in non-fiction film.
Founded in 1955, The Flaherty was established to present the annual Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, named after the maker of such seminal documentaries as Nanook of the North, Man of Aran, and Louisiana Story. Other activities include: Flaherty NYC, a seasonal screening series showcasing innovative nonfiction media; Flaherty on the Road, presenting films from the Seminar at venues across the country; and the preservation and distribution of Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North and Louisiana Story.
The Flaherty Executive Director Anita Reher, along with Flaherty Board of Trustees members Elizabeth Delude-Dix, Lorna Lowe and former trustee John Gianvito will attend in person for discussion.
The DocYard is an award-winning film and discussion series at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, and which also sponsors special screenings and co-presentations throughout the year. Each screening is a new experience as we connect audiences directly with filmmakers exploring the documentary form through insightful post-screening discussions.
